Samsung Galaxy A7 Unboxing and First Impressions

Samsung — in December ’15 — announced a new high-end addition to the Galaxy A-Series, named Galaxy A7. It’s been a little while since Galaxy A7 started selling in the Pakistani market. It is currently available at most Samsung outlets in Black, White, Gold and Pink colors with a price tag of PKR ~53,000/-.
We received our Samsung Galaxy A7 review unit yesterday, so below are some unboxing pictures and our first impressions of the device.

Galaxy A7 Unboxing

Samsung’s Galaxy A7 comes in a pretty standard packaging which Samsung has for other high-end devices as well, such as the Galaxy S6 or Note 5. Packaging itself is pretty clean, with just the smartphone name up-front and a few basic technical specs on the back.

You pull open the box to find the Galaxy A7 right in front of you, all wrapped up in packing stickers. As you’d expect, underneath the device is a quick start guide and the accessories which include: a SIM ejector tool, handsfree, data cable and the fast charging adapter. Interestingly, the charging adapter is exactly the same that you get with Galaxy S6 and Note 5 but the handsfree is not.

Galaxy A7 First Impressions

I usually use a Note 5 as my daily driver but I’ve been using the Galaxy A7 for a day now and have to admit that I’m impressed. It has the same build quality and feel that you’d expect from the higher priced Galaxy S6 or Note 5. Front and back glass panels are both protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 4.  The metallic frame of the device is bulging out from all four sides which improves the grip and makes the Galaxy A7 feel solid.

As much as we’d love to see a flawless device but Galaxy A7 does come with it’s fair share of design flaws. Weighing a hefty 172 gram, the Galaxy A7 does feel a bit heavy for its size. Moreover, the back glass panel is a fingerprint magnet and sometimes makes you feel as if the phone might slip out of hand. Not to forget, the home button on the Galaxy A7 does not protrude like it did on the Note 5. This shouldn’t be much of a problem but I personally think that a protruding home button feels quite better.

Galaxy A7 Technical Specs

  • Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) with TouchWiz
  • Dimensions: 151.5 x 74.1 x 7.3 mm, Weight: 172g

There has been little to no innovation in Lithium Ion batteries and increasing capacity brings its own challenges like higher charging time and the size of the phone. So instead of creating new batteries, companies have shifted their focus on faster charging and OPPO IS coming out with a bang. Super VOOC by OPPO is a battery charger that fully charges a mobile in just 15 minutes. Still in its prototype phase, Super VOOC Flash Charge, which is OPPO’s upgrade to VOOC Flash Charge, can charge a 2500mAh battery from 0-100% in just about 15 minutes. The technology can be used on both USB Type-C and Micro-USB. Super VOOC actually uses a 5v low voltage pulse algorithm that not only provides a safe charging and prevents overheating, the direct power transmission to the battery without any conversion, results in a 97% charging efficiency. Science and Technology Ministry Doesn’t have the Manpower to Utilize its R&D Fund

Ministry of Science and Technology and its allied departments lack capacity to utilize its funds efficiently, which is negatively affecting Research and Development (R&D) sector and hence the country has to rely on huge imports. The National Assembly Standing Committee on Science and Technology witnessed interesting moments when the committee offered its services for raising the issue of meager budget allocation at high fora. A parliamentarian assured the ministry that allocation may be raised from the current Rs 7 billion to Rs 10 billion for the ministry and its allied department. However Secretary Science and Technology Fazal Abbas Maken declined the offer while saying that they lacked the capacity to absorb the funds due to human resources shortage. The committee met with Chaudhry Tariq Bashir Cheema in the chair, and started discussing the performance of Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC).
